Energy Replacements

Misbehavior can be draining.
Love and Logic teaches a simple concept of the Energy Drain.
Kids who act irresponsibly can create a considerable energy drain for the adult.

This loss of energy can be restored in a variety of ways. One being: Do some of the parents work. These should be jobs that the parent would normally be taking care of. Or perhaps they are those chores that we just never get around to.

If you find it hard to come up with ideas for energy replacements, make a list and post it on the fridge or have it nearby to refer to. Some ideas might be:
  • Dust bookshelves
  • Vacuum schoolroom floor
  • Clean pencil sharpeners
  • Clean chalkboard
  • Straighten/alphabetize books on shelves
  • Clean the tile by the front doors
  • Wipe down doors
  • Pick up trash outside
  • Straighten games and flash cards
  • Read to a younger sibling
  • wipe/sanitize tables/desks/chairs
  • Clean computer area
  • Clean recovery area chair
  • Do math facts with brothers
  • Mop bathroom floor (downstairs)
  • Dog Poo Duty
  • Wipe down baseboards
  • Clean out silverware tray
  • Wash windows in the doors
Key principle: If I spend 45 minutes listening to my daughter whine/cry about writing, I can physically feel the energy leaving my body. By the time she's ready to be driven to theater practice, I'm out of energy to do any driving. If she'd like to do some of my work/jobs then I would be able rest and have the energy to drive later on in the day.

This isn't a punishment. If you use it as such....."If you don't get your writing done, then I won't have energy to drive you" it could very easily backfire on you and pretty soon your child will not care what kind of energy you have or don't have.

Look forward to Energy Drains and get some extra help around the house!!
